A few years back my family decided to get chickens. Many realize that how much would end up loving chickens and other “farm birds”. We’ve got a few from people on Craigslist and then thought about 50 from Atwoods a farm supply store. We first got chickens we didn’t realize how hard would be to keep editors way. So many of our chickens died from predidation. We put all the 50 chicks we got from outlets in a big dog run cage which we believed we had “fortified” with fencing, concrete, barb wire and whatever else we thought would keep animals out. Sadly our “fortified” chicken coop wasn’t so fortified and a predator who we believe to have been a raccoon went in and killed every single chick along with the ducks who lived in the coop. There was only one survivor of this horrible chicken massacre, Nancy.

So Nancy lived in our house in a box for a while. She became really sweet and LOVED to snuggle up in your hair. She would cry if she was alone and wanted to have your attention. We later got Nancy some friends so that she wouldn’t be lonely but because of the raccoons Nancy had some sort of problem with her spine or something. We never knew exactly what was wrong but her tail was always down and she had a little feather tuff that stuck out where we assumed the raccoon had grabbed her.

Sadly Nancy died a year or two later from what we believe to have been Marek’s disease. But we enjoyed Nancy’s company while it lasted. As a chick she was a great example of how sweet chickens can be. And for anyone who doesn’t think that chickens are kind, sweet and sociable animals look at a chicken like Nancy. Chickens are very sweet and many want attention. Nancy wasn’t the only chicken I’ve had who enjoyed attention. I currently have a chicken nameed perch, a white leghorn who will sprint up to you when you walk into the backyard. There are many chickens like these in the world many people just don’t realize it.
